Hey, I’m Malia!

I am a board-certified Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I’ve lived in Southern California and Salt Lake City, but am originally from Kahuku, Hawaii and am now based in Montana. I work with clients in both Montana and Utah, primarily via telehealth but with in-person sessions when available.

In addition to my private practice, I also teach courses at Montana State University-Billings, where I have been on faculty since 2011.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”

Therapeutic Approach

I have experience working with many mental health conditions utilizing different modalities. I have specialized training in the treatments of trauma and PTSD utilizing TI-CBT. I also commonly utilize motivational interviewing, parts therapy, and EMDR.

However, I believe that approach is less important than the knowledge that your therapist both understands and accepts you simply as you are today. Recent research states, “The emerging picture suggests that the quality of the client-therapist alliance is a reliable predictor of positive clinical outcome independent of the variety of psychotherapy approaches and outcome measures.” (Ardito & Rabellino, 2011)

I believe it is not possible to receive the full benefit of therapeutic work if you do not have a strong connection to your therapist. Otherwise, it can be difficult to open up and feel heard. The therapeutic relationship is therefore essential.

Testimonials

Working with a therapist can be an intimidating experience at first. Here are what a few of my former clients have said about their experience as my client. I take a friendly, accepting approach rooted in relational therapy.

“Malia is easy to talk to and makes me feel comfortable opening up. She helps ground me and walk me through tough issues. She helps redirect my thinking into helpful and healthy patterns.”

  • woman, relaxation, beach-6714008.jpg

“I love Malia! She makes me feel comfortable to talk about literally anything and work through it with her. I always look forward to my appointments!”

“Growing up as a male in a family that didn’t really talk about our issues, I’ve found it difficult to open up in sessions with my previous therapists. Malia’s easy style and calm environment helped to set me at ease, open up, and cope with the issues that had been plaguing me.”

“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.”

Got Boundary Bashers?

Maintaining boundaries with loved ones can be TOUGH. I created this free cheat sheet, Staying Sane in the Midst of Change, to help anyone do just that. You’ll find useful phrases and ideas for how to navigate big life changes. I’ve also included a few ideas for self care and small moments that can all add up to having a good day. I’ll send it to you via email for free.

Insurance and Fees
I am an “out-of-network” provider and am not contracted with insurance companies. This means that I do not bill insurance, and clients are expected to pay for services directly after the session.   Upon request, I can provide you with a superbill so that you may submit your claim to your insurance or HSA.

Fees are due in full at the time of scheduling. Upon request, I will provide invoices for patients seeking reimbursement from their insurance company or FSA/HSA.
